First legal framework
The Trade Marks Registration Act of 1875 created a legal register of marks and the first Trade Marks Registry in the world, which opened in London in 1876.
An entry in the register of a word or device, for example, a logo or picture, proves that it is a trade mark and who owns it. The registration gives the owner the exclusive right to use the trade mark, and the right to prevent unauthorised use through a legal action for infringement.
