| Intangible Asset | Identifiable non-monetary asset without physical substance. (This definition is taken from the International Accounting Standard Committee IASC 38 "Intangible Assets". It is pointed out, however, that copyright in literary and artistic works generally subsists in physical articles, for example writings on paper and buildings). IAs encompass a broad range of assets, for example, data, software, knowledge management systems, business processes, goodwill, licences as well as intellectual property rights. |
| Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) | A major type of intangible asset. There are four main types of IPR: patents, copyright, trade marks and registered design. |
| Crown copyright | The
Director of Information Policy and Services, National Archives in her role as Queen's Printer has been
appointed by Her Majesty the Queen to manage all copyrights owned by the Crown on Her Majesty's behalf.
The National Archives Information Policy team licenses on the Queen’s Printers behalf. Applications
for assignment of crown copyright are very rarely granted. In general the crown's policy is to retain
ownership and make access and re-use of copyright available through licences as the National Archive
sees fit Crown copyright material originated by the Scottish Administration is managed by the Queen's Printer for Scotland (QPS). The Information Policy team of the Office of the QPS licenses on the QPS' behalf. |
| Goodwill | The intrinsic value attributed to an organisation because of the reputation
it enjoys
with its customers. Goodwill is often embodied in an organisations brand which for private sector retail firms may often represent the majority of a company’s value. Goodwill can be asserted legally by the common-law right of "passing off". While the majority of goodwill may lay in brand, goodwill is broader than "brand" as it can accommodate value attributable to other intangibles such as staff expertise etc. |
