Restricting access to biological material

If your patent application refers to biological material, you can tell us to restrict access to samples of the material to experts.

Fill in form 8A

Fill in all sections of form 8A, including the application number and the name of the applicant. You must also tell us the number and description of the biological material and the name of the institution that stores it.

• when you file your application

• before we complete the preparations to publish your application.

There is no fee.

What happens next?

When we receive your request, we will:

• tell you when we deal with it
  
  
• publish the restriction at the same time as we publish your patent application
  
  
• tell you about any requests to access samples of the biological material.

The restriction will end when we grant the patent or if it is withdrawn or refused.
