Claims

A claim is a definition in words of the invention that you want to protect.

Writing your claims

Your main claim should list all of the main technical features of your invention including those that distinguish it from what already exists. Subsidiary or preferred features, which are not crucial to your invention, should be set out in dependent claims that can refer to one or more of the previous claims. You must write each claim as a single sentence.

Do not include any statements relating to commercial or other advantages or other non-technical aspects of your invention in your claims.

When do we need your claims?

You should file the claims and description at the same time.

Although you may choose to file your claims later, we recommend that you file them with your application because: later filed claims will not be allowed to encompass any matter which is not disclosed in your description; if you do not file claims in time your application will be terminated; and without claims we are unable to search your application. Later filed claims may be filed online.
