Phase 1 reports

In order to try and hear a broad range of views on the future direction of copyright the Intellectual Property Office arranged a series of stakeholder workshops as well as research events with consumers, SMEs and creators in the regions. This programme of externally facilitated events took place over February and March 2009 and was intended to complement the Issues Paper PDF document(485Kb) published in December 2008 which sought written views from interested parties.

  • Four stakeholder workshops were held during the period 12 February to 4 March 2009. The workshops were attended by stakeholders representing a range of interests from commercial rights holders and creators to intermediaries and user representative bodies. The events were an opportunity for people to voice their own perspectives and to hear the perspectives of others. These events were facilitated with small group discussions on key issues such as access and remuneration followed by broader plenary debates.
  • Research workshops were held in Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester and London, at the beginning of March. Separate workshops were held with creators, the public, and small businesses to seek their views on how the copyright system is currently working, with much discussion on content in the online world. These groups were brought together at a later date for a roundtable discussion on the key issues.

The Central Office of Information and British Market Research Bureau have provided the Intellectual Property Office with reports on these events;
