Design protection
If you have created a product, which is different because of its look or appearance you may be able to protect it as a design. There are two forms of design protection, registered design and design right and you may also receive protection through copyright.
Design registration
A registered design will give you a monopoly for the appearance of your product for up to 25 years.
Design right
A design right is an automatic right which will protect aspects of your design for a maximum of 15 years.
Copyright
You may be able to protect original drawings or artwork for your design with copyright.
You do not need to apply for copyright. It is an automatic right that exists as soon as you create a product or article that it protects.
