Patentability search
Many businesses are actively involved in the research and development of new products and processes to help them keep one step ahead of their competitors. This can often result in a new innovative product or process that has the potential to be patented.
But how do you know that your idea is patentable and do you have enough information so that your patent application can be drafted to get the best out of the protection it offers?
Why use this search?
A patentability search, which is sometimes called a novelty search, will help you identify any existing patents or publications that will show whether your product or process is novel and involves an inventive step, that is, it is not obvious to a skilled person. Based on a description of your idea, which does not have to be in the form of a patent application or patent claims, our expert patent searchers will carry out a wide ranging search looking for any relevant documents.
Your search will be done by one of over 200 science-graduate patent examiners. By using searchers with a technical and legal expertise in searching and examining patent applications we can ensure that you will receive a full and accurate report.
Any information that you send us about your idea will be treated in the strictest confidence and your tailored report will give you an early indication of the patentability of your idea.
Cost and timings
The costs of undertaking a patentability search will depend on the technical complexity of your idea, but they typically start from around £750 plus VAT. We will give you a free estimate of what we expect the cost of the search to be.
Your tailored report will be issued within 10 working days of us agreeing the costs with you. You are able to discuss your search with the examiner at any time.
