Transferring ownership of a trade mark

If you buy or inherit a trade mark from someone else, you must tell us so we can record the change in the register of trade mark.  This includes any change of ownership as a result of company mergers. The legal term for a transfer of ownership is an 'assignment’.

Fill in Form TM16

To transfer ownership of your registered trade mark you need to fill in form TM16 PDF document(33Kb).

There is a charge of GBP £50 for this, but the fee covers all marks you buy.

Form TM16 is not a replacement for the assignment, merely the form that you should use to ask us to record it.

You and old owners or their representatives must sign the form. If any of them cannot do so, we will accept other documents as proof that the assignment has taken place.
