How to apply
STEP 1: Before you apply
Search existing trade marks to see if there are any similar trade marks already in use which may affect your application for registration.
Check to see if it is a trade mark we can accept.
STEP 2: Choose goods and services
Research and provide descriptions of the goods and/or services you are going to use your trade mark on. We use a classification system which divides the goods and services into 45 classes.
STEP 3: Apply online – From £170
Choose from the following examination services:
- Standard
examination (£170 when paid in full with one class of goods or service)
- No refund if your trade mark cannot be registered - Right
start (£200 for one class of goods or services)
- Pay 50% on application
- No refund, but only pay the balance if you decide to continue with the application.
The online application takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete and you can ‘Save for later’ at any point.
Note: You cannot change your trade mark once you have submitted the application.
STEP 4: Examination
Receive an examination report about 30 working days after you have sent your application.
Right Start customers must pay the outstanding balance if they want to proceed with the application.
STEP 5: Publication
If your trade mark meets the criteria for registration it will be published in the Trade Marks Journal. This allows third parties the opportunity to object to the application.
STEP 6: Registration
If there are no oppositions following the publication period, your trade mark will be registered.
It takes about 3 months to register trade marks that have no objections.
