Trade Mark Classification Search
This classification search database will help you to correctly classify the goods and services that you intend to use your trade mark on.
The Intellectual Property Office will accept the terms shown in the database as descriptions in specifications which you will need to list when making your trade mark application.
A search can be made for a search term and/or a class number. To perform a search simply:
- Select the class number from the drop-down list or leave it as 'All'.
- Enter the word(s) that must appear in the classification descriptions.
- Click 'Search' to execute the search.
There is more information available explaining how we classify
A summary page of the total number of hits for each class number selected will be shown.
The classification descriptions are then listed alphabetically. To view the descriptions starting with a particular letter, click the appropriate button.
Search Tips
- If multiple search words are entered such as 'babies napkins', the search engine looks for occurrences of both 'babies' and 'napkins'. It does not look for classification descriptions with either 'babies' or 'napkins'.
- Avoid typing mistakes because the complete word is searched.
- To reduce the number of hits, type complete words and select a class number. For example, searching 'bab' and 'nap' in all classes will yield more hits than searching the complete words in one class.
- To include plurals in the search ('babies' and 'baby'), enter the stem ('bab').
- View the classification guide.
Some items may be classified under more than one class. This is sometimes denoted by an asterisk (*) in the classification description, but the absence of an asterisk is not a guarantee that a particular item is exclusive to one class.
If at any stage you wish to return to the search screen to amend the search criteria, or to the class summary screen to select a different class, utilise the STOP and BACK buttons on your browser.
If you are still unsure, an email service is available.
