Summary

The application relates to a power system based around a heat engine which might be used in a vehicle. It includes a heat pump which cooperates with a high temperature heat reservoir and a low temperature heat reservoir and has a number of modes of operation, amongst which are modes which make use of the heat pump to recover and store energy. Despite the use of the term “perpetual motion” appearing in the specification the hearing officer found, based on the entire teaching of the application, that the invention did not relate to a perpetual motion machine which contravenes the accepted laws of physics and therefore did not contravene section 1(1)(c). He however found that the claims lacked clarity and support and therefore remitted the case back to the examiner for the issue of a further report. The application would be refused if the matters found by the hearing officer to lack clarity and/or support were not addressed by the applicant.
