Summary
The inventions in both patents relate to methods of plugging and abandoning (P&A) a subterranean well such as an oil well. When such a well is being abandoned, it is necessary to seal the well to prevent oil leaking into the environment. The applicants sought a declaration that the use of their SJI Mk II Tool did not infringe either patent. The Hearing Officer was satisfied firstly that the applicants had provided the necessary particulars and that the use of the tool would not infringe either patent. He indicated that a declaration would be granted but that the parties would have a further opportunity to make submissions of the wording of the declaration.
